The future is looking bright for the near east side of Indianapolis.
We’re breaking down some of the development plansin the works for this side of downtown.
Elevator Hill
What used to be the Angie’s List campus, which vacated in 2017, is now known as Elevator Hill. This 13.5-acre property is a collection of industrial space, historic buildings, parking lots, and homes. This is an ongoing project that is expected to span over 10 years and take up to $250 million to complete.
The firm leading the redevelopment project, 1820 Ventures, has a goal of reconnecting this area with the newly reopened Market Street with planned projects ranging from retail to housing to education.
Most recent plans called for:
Up to 375,000 sqft of office space
New neighborhood retail amenities
Up to 500 units of multifamily housing + more than 20 units of single-family housing
Parking garages containing at least 1,500 spaces
Extensive street improvements
This project aims to be another premiere mixed-use district. Think Bottleworks.
The former Angie’s List campus spans 13.5 acres on the city’s near east side.

Ford Building
Now, we’re looking at the old Ford Building at 1315 E. Washington St. This site used to be an automobile assembly plant, a battery manufacturing site, and a storage facility in Indy’s Holy Cross neighborhood.
In addition to TWG Development’s Ford Assembly redevelopment, it recently proposed a six-story mixed-use project just east of the Ford Building (where Ash & Elm Cider Co. Restaurant and the Assembly Apartments sit). Although the housing complex has characteristics of upscale housing, TWG focused the Ford Building on providing affordable housing with apartments for less than Marion County’s standard market rate.
The next piece to this project looks to be a similar concept with retail or office space on the ground level and residential above. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more.

Bust out the holiday playlist and ugly Christmas sweaters — It’s Nov. 1, which means we’re getting into the holiday spirit.
We’re 24 days away from Indy’s iconic holiday tradition: The Circle of Lights.
The tradition of lighting the Soldiers and Sailors Monument with 4,784 colored lights for the holidays began in 1962, marking its 60th anniversary this year. The lighting ceremony takes place the day after Thanksgiving (Fri., Nov. 25) with festivities beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Santa will make a visit from the North Pole to flip the switch and turn on the lights with the AES Indiana Coloring Contest winner at 8 p.m. The coloring contest is open now until Tues., Nov. 15.
Want to be a part of the magic? Downtown Indy, Inc. is still looking for volunteers to assist with directions, hospitality, and more during the celebration. See the list of opportunities.
THE WRAP
Today’s issue was written by Nicole.
Editor’s pick: Similarly to the Indy 500, I feel like either you go to the Circle of Lights celebration every year or you’re a Hoosier who’s never been. Unfortunately, I have to admit I’m the latter. Maybe this year I’ll finally catch the flip of the switch. 💡
