Setting records + taking names in the Circle City

Does anyone else remember flipping through Guinness World Record books when you were a kid and thinking how cool it would be to set one yourself?

To celebrate Guinness World Record Day, we’re rounding up some of the most impressive (and unusual) records Hoosiers are claiming.

🏄 Longest time spent surfing a wave (female)

Lori Keeton takes the wake for this, tripling the previous record + more than doubling the male record. Not only is this an impressive feat, it’s also a noble one, as Lori made the attempt to raise awareness the nonprofit Wake for Warriors, which supports veterans.

💻 Most laptops toppled in a domino fashion

A total of 2,910 laptops were knocked down one after the other by Technology Recyclers — a locally owned + operated recycling service that allows Hoosiers to get rid of their old electronics for free. Watch the world record unfold.

🏈 Most NFL game wins in a single decade

Believe it or not, our very own Colts set this record with 115 games from 2000 to 2009. This was the golden era of Indy football with Tony Dungy as head coach + Peyton Manning as starting quarterback.

🍎 Most apples picked in eight hours

We’re bringing it back to the year 1980 for this record, which was set by George Adrian of Adrian Orchards. He collected 15,830 pounds of the favored fruit + has never been usurped as record holder.

🏀 Most steals per game average

International Citizen of the Year + former Indiana Fever star player Tamika Catchings claims this WNBA record, which was set in 2016. In 457 games she made a total of 1,074 steals between the years of 2002 and 2016.

These are by no means the only records Hoosiers have set, but I might have set a new record for the longest story about world records if I had shared them all with you.

This might sound counter-intuitive, but you might want to head north for spring break next year.

Geist Waterfront Park is set to open in Fishers (111th Street + Olio Road) on Saturday, March 18, 2023 making it the only spot for Hoosiers to use Geist Reservoir without a boat.

Fishers residents will get in for free at the $27 million beach + nature park that spans 70 acres. Potential plans for the park include:
  • a 100-yard-long beach
  • rehabilitation of multiple ecosystems in the area
  • a fishing dock
  • natural playscapes
  • green infrastructure systems
On Saturday, Nov. 19, Hoosiers will have an opportunity to get a sneak peek at the park’s progress during a free preview night as Phase 1 construction wraps up for the year. The event will include games, activities, music + food trucks. Register your car load.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Anna.

Editor’s pick: If you were hoping to see some Indy 500 world records, you’re in luck. There were so many listed, I didn’t want to choose just one. Conveniently, Guinness compiled some of the most impressive accomplishments in a list, including the youngest + oldest winners and the fastest opening lap. Take a lap — I mean look — for yourself.
