February is Black History Month, a time to honor and recognize the difficulties, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans. Check out some of the local events taking place and other ways to celebrate and learn in Indy.
  • Legacy: Celebrating Black Voices | Friday, Feb. 3-Saturday, Feb. 25 | Times vary | Garfield Park Arts Center, 2432 Conservatory Dr., Indianapolis | Free | Visitors will find paintings, drawings, mixed media, and sculptures by Black artists.
  • Art & Soul: Featured Artist Showcase | Wednesday, Feb. 8 | 7 p.m. | The Jazz Kitchen, 5377 N. College Ave., Indianapolis | $15-$25 | Three of the four Art & Soul 2023 featured artists will perform at the Jazz Kitchen — jazz musician Brandon Douthitt and playwright Crystal V. Rhodes will take the stage while visual artist Jamichael Kyng Pollard creates a live painting.
  • Meet The Artists XXXV Masters Exhibit & Gala | Wednesday, Feb. 1-Saturday, March 25 | 5:30-10 p.m. | Central Library, 40 E.   • Kyle T. Mays: Leon Jett Memorial Lecture | Thursday, Feb. 16 | 6:30-8 p.m. | Eiteljorg Museum, 500 W.   • After seeing a rise in local fire-related deaths in January, IFD is reminding the community that homes are required to have one 10-year, sealed-battery smoke alarm per floor. The department is offering to install smoke alarms for those who need it in the IFD service district. Fill out a request form. 🚒 (WISH)

  • On Saturday, the Hoosiers beat Purdue 79-74, however that didn’t change much where the team stands on the AP poll. The Boilermakers remain No. 1 and IU moved up three spots to No. 18. IU has won six of its past seven games and Purdue won nine straight before losing to IU. 🏀 (IndyStar)
Concert
  • Indiana native John Mellencamp kicked off his “Live and In Person 2023” tour with a show at the IU Auditorium Sunday and a second show last night at the same location. John will also perform in Evansville (May 5-6) and Fort Wayne (May 15-16), and end the tour in South Bend in June. Get tickets. 🎶 (WTHR)

  • Whiteland 15-year-old Noah McKeown is doing what he can to collect supplies for the Johnson County Animal Shelter. Last year, he collected more than 1,900 items that pets would need while waiting for their furever home. He’s now working to start his own nonprofit called, “Noah Helps Pets.” 🐾 (WRTV)

  • A lucky Hoosier who bought their Powerball ticket in McCordsville matched four out of five numbers, plus the Powerball — winning $50,000. Fun fact: The Powerball lottery began in 1992 and the very first winning ticket was drawn in Indiana. 💰 (CBS4)
