All things mid-century modern
Mid century modern furniture inside FLUX

Though this architectural trend occurred between the 1930s and 1960s, the style is absolutely timeless.

So where can you find a little slice of mid-century modern around the Circle City? Stick with us, daddy-o, we’re about to tell you.

Shop

FLUX, 515 N. Luett Ave.

You could previously find this spot tucked away in the Fountain Fletcher District, but now it’s got a new home on the near west side. The entire shop is an homage to the furniture you’d see in an episode of “Mad Men,” including dining sets and writing desks.

Midland Arts and Antiques, 907 E. Michigan St.

You might have to dig a little in this massive building with over 200 independent vendors, but we have no doubt you’ll find classic vintage items like an Eames chair or an ochre floor lamp.

Visit

Columbus, IN

You might remember us gushing about the Miller House and Garden in our guide to Columbus, IN — and we’re reminding you that it’s a must for any mid-century modern moguls. The house is packed with futuristic kitchen items and customized furniture. And you’re sure to learn something about landscape design during the 90-minute tour. Sign up.

Plus, while you’re in the neighborhood, why not caf up at Lucabe Coffee Co.? Its location perched above a creek at 2531 Eastbrook Plz. was converted from an old bank designed by Harry Weese and it’s quite a sight — inside and out.

Sports
  • The Colts have a new quarterback. After releasing Matt Ryan last week, the team agreed to terms with former Eagle Gardner Minshew II on a one-year, $3.5 million contract. Rumor has it they signed Minshew as a buffer for a rookie quarterback they plan on drafting. (FOX59)
  • During round one of March Madness, top-seeded Purdue men’s basketball team was defeated by the FDU Knights (63-58) in “one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history” on Friday. The Hoosiers’ dance is done, as well. IU lost to Miami 85-69 in the second round on Sunday. They end their season with a record of 23-12. Thanks for a great season, Hoosiers. (FOX59)
  • On the women’s side, Notre Dame is heading to the Sweet Sixteen after beating Mississippi State 53-48 in the second round on Sunday. The Irish will play No. 2 Maryland on Saturday, March 25. IU also won against Tennessee Tech 77-47 in the first round on Saturday. They play No. 9 Miami tonight. (WTHR)
Open
  • A new bar opened just in time for downtown’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities on Friday. Park & Rec is located on the second floor of what was Taps and Dolls before it closed last year. Like its predecessor, it also has arcade games and drinks. The first floor will be used as a family-friendly sports bar, which will open May 15. (WRTV)
Award
  • Purdue University has been getting major accolades this year. Researchers at the school were recognized by Guinness World Records as the creators of the world’s whitest paint, in addition to winning the 2023 Innovation Award in the sustainability category and winning the 2023 Gizmodo Science Fair. (IBJ)
Plan Ahead
  • Broad Ripple recently announced a few important dates. The 2023 Duck Race will take place on Sunday, June 4 with free children’s activities from 3-5 p.m. The race will start at 4:30 p.m. Plus, the Broad Ripple Art Walk is coming up on Saturday, April 15 from 1-4 p.m. Mark those calendars.
Finance
  • Refinance rates are skyrocketing. But home equity rates remain relatively low — which means that now is a great time to borrow against your home. Calculate your payment.*

Correction
  • Hoosiers, we got our mascots mixed up. When we told you about Hoosier Rick Dunkle’s new career at UIndy in Friday’s newsletter, we mistakenly said he was working with the Jaguars instead of the Greyhounds. We apologize for the confusion.

Seasonal

🌱 Happy first day of Spring

Today marks the spring equinox (aka the first day of Spring).

Technically speaking, it’s the day that the sun crosses the Earth’s equator from the Southern Hemisphere into the Northern Hemisphere. The shift marks the astronomical start of spring and days will become “longer” because there will be more time between sunrise and sunset.

Looking to celebrate the season? Head to our events page to see community events happening this week and beyond.

If you’re in the mood for some spring cleaning, here are the essentials we recommend:

🧽 Mr. Clean Magic Erasers

💧 Microfiber cleaning cloths

🧹 Duster kit

🍓 Refrigerator organizer bins

🧼 Spinning scrubber brush

Bonus: Hire a cleaning professional to tidy up your humble abode.

Hey Ted Lasso fans. If you’ve been watching the third season, then you caught the not-so-subtle reference to our namesake (and iconic film). However, unlike us, Roy Kent didn’t know what the term “Hoosiers” meant around the 10-minute mark. Which origin story for the Indiana native nickname is your favorite? Let us know for a chance to be featured in an upcoming newsletter.
