How you can help those affected by tornadoes south of Indy

We’re thinking of our neighbors to the south.

The National Weather Service confirmed 17 damaging tornadoes touched down Friday night into Saturday morning across the state.

The largest of those was reported in Sullivan County, along with two in Johnson County, causing severe damage to the Whiteland area (~25 minutes south of Indianapolis).

As Hoosiers work to recover from the storms, here are a few ways you can help:
  • Sullivan Community Fund — The fund is set up to offer financial support to storm victims. Donations can be made online or sent to: Help Sullivan Recover, WV Community Foundation, 200 S. 8th St., Terre Haute, IN 47807
  • Fire Angels, Inc. in Johnson County — The organization is collecting clothing for victims in Whiteland. Check its Facebook page for updates.
  • Salvation Army — Donations of shelf-stable food, household items, and toiletries can be dropped off at the Red Shield Center at 325 Market Plaza in Greenwood from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. this week. To donate to those impacted, text the word HOOSIER to 24-365 or donate online.
  • The American Red Cross — You can make a monetary donation online to help people affected by tornadoes and storms in the south and Midwest.

From the editor
I’m from Johnson County and it was so sad to see my Facebook feed flooded with neighbors and old friends who have been affected by the storm. Grace Assembly of God Church and Convoy of Hope are partnering up to offer support to those affected. The church at 6822 S. US Hwy 31 in Whiteland will function as a tornado relief site this week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
