Did you know that according to IUPUI research, older adults are the fastest growing demographic in central Indiana — by the year 2030, one in every five Hoosiers will be over the age of 65.

Here are some fun ways to get involved and explore Indy as an older adult.

Get active

  • Try the Y. The YMCA offers free group exercise classes from low-impact to high-intensity. Check out classes like personal training, scuba, yoga, and Zumba.
  • Join the adult walking club “The Garfield Gaiters.” The group invites adults ages 55+ to a planned walk from Garfield Park Library using trails throughout the park and nearby neighborhoods. The walks take place twice monthly and last ~45 minutes. The next walk is on Wednesday, April 19 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Learn something new

  • Want to brush up on your tech skills? Indianapolis Public Library branches offer computer and technology workshops to help you improve your skills and give you the resources to navigate the internet safely and efficiently. Check out the events calendar to sign up.

Get involved

  • Got a green thumb? Join the Indianapolis Garden Club. The group supports public gardens and green spaces in the Indy area and focuses on community gardening efforts, public education, civic beautification and conservation efforts, and programs promoting the knowledge and love of gardening. Save the date: the 27th annual Indianapolis Garden Club Garden Walk is set for Wednesday, June 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Volunteer with a local organization like the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis. It’s a great way to help teach young people valuable life lessons and learn something about yourself in return. It’s hosting an “Adult Recess” event to embrace your inner child on Thursday, April 27 at 6 p.m. at the Lilly Boys & Girls Club.

📚 A bookstore boom

Bookstore boom in Indianapolis, IN

With e-readers and chain bookstores, you may think the need for local bookstores is becoming obsolete.

Several locals think otherwise and are setting up shop to prove it.

The first of a few independently-owned bookstores coming to the Circle City is Tomorrow Bookstore on Mass Ave. Co-owners Julia Breakey and Jake Budler are taking over the former City Dogs Grocery space at 882 Mass Ave. to create a cozy space that will allow people to build connections through stories.

The shop’s grand opening is set for Saturday, April 15 with soft opening hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the meantime.

The Whispering Shelf, a new and used bookstore, plans to open in Lockerbie Square sometime this fall. Dream Palace Books & Coffee is coming to the former Thirsty Scholar space on 16th Street mid-June.

Mark your calendar: Saturday, April 29 is Independent Bookstore Day.

I love a local bookstore, so I have to shout out one of my favorites for southsiders — Wild Geese Bookshop. The cute brick and mortar in Downtown Franklin has been around since 2016 and is hosting a “Roll & Read” summer camp for grown-ups at Franklin Skate Club on Thursday, July 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
