How to start a business in Indianapolis, IN

Last year, Indiana was ranked the best state to start a business by Forbes — based on a combination of low taxes, reasonable cost of living, and workforce.

With that being said, if you’ve thought about starting a business, Indy is an ideal place for new businesses to succeed.

To get your business idea up and running, INBiz is the state’s “one-stop” resource for registering + managing your business and ensuring it complies with state laws and regulations.

What you need to do:

  • Decide what type of business you want to start. Sole proprietorship, corporation, limited liability company, etc. The best choice for your business depends on factors like liability, taxes, control, and flexibility.
  • Decide on a business name. The state of Indiana requires the name of a business to be distinguishable from any other business of the same type already on record with the Secretary of State’s office. When you create an Access Indiana account, you can use the “Check Name Availability” search to make sure the name you want hasn’t been taken.
  • Get a registered agent. Every business must continuously maintain a registered agent and registered office in Indiana. A registered agent is responsible for receiving important legal and tax documents for the business.
  • Submit required filings. All business owners have to file annually with the county assessor’s office where the business operates. Learn which files you need to submit for your business.
Now that we’ve laid out the groundwork for you, start registering your business.

🌤️ It’s officially patio season

Dine outdoors in Indy

Outdoor patio with trellis covered with vines

With the taste of warmer weather we’ve had recently, local restaurants + bars are raising the roof — patio season is upon us.

You can bask in the sun and sip on the sidewalk at these local spots.

Bodhi: Craft Bar + Thai Bistro | 922 Mass Ave.

The vibe at Bodhi’s patio transports you to an urban jungle surrounded by a wall of greenery + a roof of vines, topped off with string lights to set the mood. While you’re there, you can sip on the refreshing Secret Garden cocktail — it’s a zero proof drink.

Baby’s | 2147 N. Talbott St.

Enjoy your burger and boozy shake outside on Baby’s colorful outdoor space. There’s both shaded seating with fans and a green space with picnic tables where furry friends are welcome.

Bocca | 122 E. 22nd St.

Enjoy your vino and pasta on this near north side patio. For added ambiance, visit on Tuesdays for live music. We also recommend pairing warm weather with a frosé.

Public Greens | 902 E. 64th St., Broad Ripple

After a walk on the Monon Trail, you can stroll right up to the cozy patio at Public Greens. This spot is a modern cafeteria featuring locally grown produce and you can even enjoy your meal in a mini greenhouse for a little more privacy on the patio.

Got a go-to patio that we didn’t mention? Add it to our list.

If you like southern comfort food, recently opened Tupelo Honey at CityWay downtown also has a brand new 1,200-sqft patio space. I really enjoyed its chicken and waffles and tea drinks.
