5 ways to reduce your food waste on Earth Day (and every day)

A woman prepares a number of meals at a table
Second Helpings works with wholesalers, grocery stores, farmers, caterers, restaurants, and event centers to make our local food system more efficient and less wasteful across the supply chain. | Photo provided by Second Helpings
Did you know? Over a third of all available food goes uneaten through loss or waste in the US. Read: That’s over a pound of food waste per person, per day.

For 25 years, Second Helpings has led the fight to reduce food waste in Central Indiana. To help them with their fight, here are five easy ways to cut down on food waste at home:
  • Check your fridge before shopping
  • Store food properly
  • Compost
  • Meal plan
  • Love your leftovers*

News Notes
Opening
  • MOTW’s Carmel location off of Old Meridian Street announced its grand opening on Sunday, April 30 at 10 a.m. This is the coffee shop’s fourth location and it might be the most beautiful one yet. Check out the pictures on social media.
Biz
  • Dubbed the most innovative music company by Fast Company Magazine, Indy-based Mandolin, is going out of business. The concert livestreaming platform launched just short of three years ago and will close operations as of today. Artists like Lil Wayne + The Lumineers used this service in the past. (IBJ)
Edu
  • A new partnership has emerged between the Educate ME foundation + Marian University to address the growing teacher shortage and diversify the teaching pipeline. The Black Teacher Residency program will offer full-ride scholarships to 10-15 students to earn their masters of art in education at Marian in the fall. (WISH)
Legacy
  • Basketball legend Tom Jernstedt will be honored with a statue at the east side intersection of Illinois + Georgia streets today at 11 a.m. Remarks will be given by Tamika Catchings, Bill Estes, Chris Denari, and Dan Gavitt for the “Father of the Final Four” during the unveiling. (FOX59)
Arts
  • As part of the Indianapolis Bicentennial Legends mural series, Hoosier poet Etheridge Knight will be painted on the side of Chatterbox jazz club on Mass Ave. Artist Elio Mercado was selected among 130 other artists to create the artwork and will start working on it in June. (WRTV)
Seasonal
  • Grab a blanket + maybe some coffee — the Lyrid meteor shower will peak over the weekend. You’ll be able to see 10-20 shooting stars per hour in the pre-dawn hours on Sunday and possibly Saturday and Monday, as well. Pro tip: face east when watching for the best results. (WTHR)
Festival
  • Two fun facts about Kentucky: It has more barrels of bourbon than people, and it’s also home to the Kentucky Bourbon Festival — one of the country’s original whiskey festivals, happening Sept. 15-17. Sign up for their newsletter to be the first to know when tickets are available — we hear they go fast.*
Finance
  • Refinance rates are skyrocketing. But home equity rates remain relatively low — which means that now is a great time to borrow against your home. Calculate your payment.*
Holiday
  • Mañana es el Día de la Tierra, una fecha que se remonta a 1970 como iniciativa de un senador estadounidense que fue testigo de un vertido de petróleo. En la actualidad, este día une a 1000 millones de personas en 193 países. Translate this news with Babbel (currently offering 55% off lessons) in The Wrap at the bottom of our newsletter.*
Shop
  • We’re firm believers in spoiling the ones we love — especially our pets. That’s why we’re adding these two things to our shopping carts: this customizable velvet collar and this durable bed that features a removable slipcover. Don’t forget the treats. We love these soft chews for doggos and these freeze dried snacks for cats.
  • Celebrate Earth Day by supporting some of our Six & Main brands. Rainier Watch, a business inspired by mountains, gives a portion of its sales to organizations that protect National Parks, and Plant Based Candles allows customers to reuse the vessel as a planter with wildflower seeds included in each order.

From the editor
Last year, I really enjoyed strolling over to Indiana Grown’s Monumental Marketplace on Monument Circle — a once-a-year farmers market of sorts with vendors + food trucks from across the state. The 2023 date hasn’t been announced yet, but we’ll keep you updated.
