News Notes
Development
  • Travel center biz Wally’s plans to build a $30 million, 24-hour gas station + store in Whitestown. It would be 45,000 sqft with 80 gas pumps, 15-20 EV charging stations, and employ 150-200 Hoosiers. A review of the plan is on the Whitestown Town Council’s calendar for Wednesday, July 12. (IBJ)
Opening
  • Jack’s Donuts is on the rise. It’s having its grand opening at Intech Park (6260 Intech Commons Blvd.) on Saturday, June 23 + announced it would be opening its first out-of-state location in Utah earlier this year. The local chain also opened its doors at 2128 Broad Ripple Ave. recently.
Edu
  • It’s official. On Wednesday, IU + Purdue approved an arrangement that formalizes the separation of the two campuses downtown. “Indiana University Indianapolis” and “Purdue University in Indianapolis” are the new names for the schools and they will begin operating independently by the 2024 fall semester. (Inside Indiana Business)
State
  • The Hoosier State’s Choice Scholarship Program saw the largest increase in student numbers in almost 10 years during the 2022-23 year — growing by 20%. Indiana also spent 29% more than the previous year + participation is expected to rise, due to a recent eligibility expansion. See more numbers. (IBJ)
Watch
  • Free movies? Sign us up. Bottleworks’ Living Room Theater announced it will show free classic movies this summer, including “Blazing Saddles,” “Jaws” + “The Big Lebowski.” If you can’t catch the Sunday free screenings, there will be paid showings throughout the week. Get your tickets and see the schedule. (IndyStar)
Family
  • After 33 years, the Raging Rapids ride at Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari is retiring. However, the park said that it “intend[s] to return the sound of laughter to Boulder Canyon as soon as [it] possibly can,” so there’s hope that another ride will take its place soon. (WISH)
Sports
  • The US Olympic Team trials for swimming are making a splash in our community next spring. In 2024, Lucas Oil Stadium will host the nine-day event with a venue that can seat ~30,000 people per session (read: it’s on track to be the largest-ever indoor swim meet). Pro tip: Three-day ticket packages are now on sale.*
Wellness
Correction
  • Oops, we flexed too soon. Yesterday, we told you that Indy City Barbell is opening a second location at 104 S. College Ave. Turns out, it’s not adding a location. It’s moving to that spot for an upgrade to its current downtown location.

In an effort to curb the spike in violence around the city, local nonprofit Youth 2 Greatness Inc. is stepping up its “Chess in the Park” programming. President Yuri Smith says the game allowed him to develop critical thinking skills when he was young + saved him from going down the wrong path.

The organization recently received $75,000 to expand the project and hire community navigators to go door-to-door to help Hoosiers in need find transportation, housing, and food security. It will also be used to host events outside of Frank Young Park — where the program got its start.

Thanks to the Indianapolis Foundation, Yuri plans to bring events to the 46202 + 46208 zip codes with Saturday events like “The Kickback” on July 1, “The Cleanup” on July 8, and “The Plug” on July 15. Health, job, and educational resources will be incorporated into “The Plug” for those looking for assistance.
