🥪 Lettuce celebrate National Sandwich Day

INDYtoday: INDY_Turchettis_Sandwich_AUG2023

Get bready — today is National Sandwich Day, and we’re going big (like foot-long big) with our list of some of the best sandos in the city.

Shapiro’s Delicatessen, 808 S. Meridian St. | No Indy sandwich roundup would be complete without Shapiro’s — which has been slinging legendary corned beef, pastrami, and much more since 1905. Thanks to the cafeteria-style setup, you also get your choice of delectable side dishes and desserts.

Turchetti’s Salumeria, 1110 Prospect St. | This one’s for the carnivores. The quality and taste of the Indiana-raised meat and hyper-local produce that make up Turchetti’s sandwiches is unmatched. The lunch special — a ‘wich and side for $11.99 — is hard to beat.

World Famous HotBoys, 1004 Virginia Ave. | Wanna really spice up your life? Check out these sandos filled with huge pieces of hot chicken (and we mean hot; it’s best to be conservative when selecting your spice level.) Pro tip: if you’re a fellow sauce fanatic, order an extra “money sauce.”

Chao Vietnamese Street Food, 7854 E. 96th St. | If you haven’t had a banh mi, are you really a sandwich fan? This joint in Fishers serves them up with your choice of protein. Make sure to grab a boba tea too.

Porter Books & Bread, 5719 Lawton Loop E. Dr. | Tucked into a nondescript corner of Lawrence is this cozy library café. Order a Vonnegut, Virgil, or any other sandwich named after your favorite author and find a quiet nook to get some reading or work done.

Between the creative sandwiches and cozy vibes, Porter Books & Bread is the perfect place to hole up on a rainy (or sunny) day.

Soupremacy, 7 E. Market St. | This café may be best known for its small batch soups, but its paninis shine just as bright. Try the Dirty Swede for a slightly sweet Meatless Monday shakeup.

Are we full of baloney? Send us your faves that we missed.

We’ve all been feeling the pressure at the pump for what feels like years now.

But on the bright side, gas prices in Marion County are roughly five cents per gallon below the national average. If you’ve got a 10 gallon tank, that means you’re saving 50 cents every time you fill up — which doesn’t seem like much, but it adds up quickly.

Here’s a small sampling of the bang you can get for your (half) buck in Indy:
  • 1/10 of a capocollo twist from Amelia’s
  • 1/6 of an Indiana state floral sticker from Silver in the City
  • 1/48 of a pound of fudge from Kilwins
  • ~16.5 minutes of downtown street parking
  • 3/4 of a waffle cone at Square Scoop
  • 1 game of foosball at Pins

While this newsletter was all about sandwiches, I have to confess that my favorite meal at HotBoys is the guap fries. The menu refers to the cheese sauce as “liquid gold,” and I couldn’t agree more.
