🎨 The craft and the furious

INDYtoday: INDY_Cookies by Kelsey
We know what you’re wondering — and yes, Kelsey’s cookies taste just as delicious as they look. | @cookies.by.kelsey
Local art is a big part of what helps a community thrive, and Indy is flooded with incredible makers. Here are just a few you can look to for inspiration, unique gifts, or just an excuse to treat yourself.

Cookies by Kelsey
  • If you ever doubted that baking is an art form, one look at Kelsey’s Instagram will set you straight. Her custom cookies make the perfect showstopping dessert for any special occasion. Plan ahead: orders book out several months in advance.
Red’s Super Rose
  • Red’s Super Rose is more than just flowers. The family behind the bouquets are curators of all things artistic, selling a variety of goods from their driveway stand located near the corner of East 9th + N. Graham Avenue. Stop by for candlemaking kits, kitschy jewelry, homegrown produce, and, of course, flowers.

Weeping Zoila Goods
  • Nobody does hand embroidery like Zoie. We’re blown away by the portraits she creates, but don’t overlook her work with quotes and special dates too. You can also get your own DIY kit from her Etsy shop.

News Notes
Weather
  • While the weather in Indy has felt pretty temperamental lately, it turns out we’re pretty lucky when it comes to natural disasters. A new report found that Indiana is No. 3 in the US for fewest FEMA weather disasters of the last decade. However, it’s still important to be prepared.
Read
  • The John Green vs. Hamilton County library feud seems to have reached a happy conclusion. After the library transferred his bestselling young adult novel “The Fault in Our Stars” to the adult section last week, the board president reversed the decision and moved the book back to its original location. Drink
  • Just in time for football season, Upland Brewing Company released its Hoosier Gameday Lager. A portion of proceeds will benefit Indiana University Student Scholarships. Find out where you can buy it. (WISH)
Feel Good
  • Meet your new favorite local entrepreneur — Kennedy Washington, the 12-year-old girl behind Headbands with a Heart. After long stays in the hospital due to congenital heart disease, Kennedy asked the Make-A-Wish foundation to help her launch a business that can give back to other children at Riley Hospital. At last, Colts season is upon us and we could not be more amped. Here are a few upcoming highlights to pull out your royal blues and whites for.
  • Don’t miss the first home preseason game on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m., when the Colts will take on the Chicago Bears.
  • Love music almost as much as you love football? Snag free tickets to the Colts Kickoff Concert on Friday, Sept. 8, featuring the Jim Irsay Band + Jim’s insanely impressive collection of rock, American history, and pop culture memorabilia. If that wasn’t enough to grab your attention, guest performers include John Mellencamp and Ann Wilson of Heart.
  • This year’s Lucas Oil menu refresh is nothing short of tantalizing — new general concourse items include an Indy style foot-long hot dog with street corn, chopped bacon, chipotle ranch, and fried onions + barbecue brisket nachos with local JohnTom’s barbecue sauce.
