Old City Hall to be redeveloped with 32-story tower

City officials announced that Indianapolis-based developer TWG Development has been chosen to redevelop Old City Hall + its parking lot at 222 N. Alabama St. to include a 32-story, mixed-use tower with a boutique 21c Museum Hotel.

The project, being called the “Alabama Redevelopment,” is expected to cost $140 million with city financing and support.

The building’s past

The redevelopment plan for the 113-year-old historic City Hall building has been in the works for a while, with the city spending years looking for answers of what to do with the majestic building.

It’s been vacant since 2016 — but before that it was the Indianapolis Public Library until 2007, the Indiana State Museum from 1967 to 2002, and housed city services until 1962 when the City-County building opened.

The building’s future

Now, it’s planned to become home to a 21c Museum Hotel public art gallery. The remainder of the space in the four-story, Classic Revival building will be used as community or office space.

The tower will feature 190 new apartment units, including 10 affordable units, with the hotel occupying floors six to 13 with 150 boutique rooms, a lobby, restaurant, and curated retail space.

The planned 32-story tower would be among the tallest buildings downtown behind the Regions Tower and OneAmerica Tower — which are 36 stories. The tallest building in the state, the nearby Salesforce Tower, is 48 stories.

TWG is still in negotiations with 21c Museum Hotels and a deal has not yet been finalized.

Construction of the project is expected to begin in late 2024.

It seems like museum hotels are the new trend. In March 2022, I stayed at a 21c Museum Hotel in Nashville as part of 6AM City’s company retreat + just this last weekend, I stayed at the Angad Arts Hotel in St. Louis — and I enjoyed my experiences at both.
