Biggest road projects in Indianapolis this year

If you commute around central Indiana, chances are you’ve passed through some construction sites. The Indiana Department of Transportation is continuing several large road projects around Indy.

We’re breaking down some of the biggest projects that could have an impact on your commute this year.

I-69 Finish Line

The Interstate 69 Finish Line project is the big ticket item on the list of road projects and is the nation’s newest interstate that will be fully opened to traffic by the end of the year.

The highway project connecting Evansville to Indy included constructing an interstate from Martinsville to I-465 in Indianapolis + adding an additional travel lane on I-465 from I-65 to I-70 on the southwest side of Indianapolis. The majority of the work that is left now lies in Marion County. Follow along for traffic updates.

Eventually, drivers will notice less congestion along I-465 and I-69 on the northeast side of Indianapolis after the Clear Path project is finished in 2025. It will add new travel and ramp lanes, as well as 14 bridges to the roadway. Until then, drivers on the northeast side of Indianapolis should expect occasional delays as construction continues.

Tomorrow, March 7 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. there will be a single lane closure on the ramp from I-69 South to I-465 South, which will alternate between the right and left lane as work is completed. Get more traffic updates.

Ramp metering

Drivers on the southeast side of Indy will notice changes in how they merge. According to INDOT, ramp meters are being placed on I-465 between I-65 and I-70 on the southeast side of the loop. Ramp metering controls the frequency of vehicles entering the roadway to match road capacity + will only be used during peak travel periods and when crashes occur.

Meters are being being placed at:
  • Emerson Avenue
  • Southeastern Avenue
  • Shadeland Avenue
  • Brookville Road/US 52
  • Washington Street/US 40

I travel down to Greenwood from the west side of Indy pretty often, so I take the new I-69 section from 465 to Greenwood and I have to say — it’s looking pretty nice + makes that drive so much smoother without all the stoplights.
