The unwritten rule for tourists is that they must take a photo on the Circle. | Photo by INDYtoday team
Whether you’re an Indy native or a relative newcomer, there are just some things every Hoosier understands to be true. We asked our readers to share the Circle City’s unwritten rules, from common city knowledge to relatable trends + local lingo.
The unspoken rules everyone knows
“If you don’t live in Marion County, you’re not from Indy. Sorry not sorry.” — @playtimeontherock
“Never root for the New England Patriots. Carb Day is a holiday. The 500 is the start of summer.” — u/Purplemaserati
We’re kind to our neighbors
“Always say, ‘Ope, sorry, let me sneak past ya.’” — @afrozenbubble
We’ve learned a thing or two from commuting
“You must always wave at a driver who stops to let you cross the street!” — @moburoasters
“4-way stop: ‘No, you go.’” — @petermerante
“It’s totally normal to cross the middle of Washington Street right in front of cars.” — @coreynregan
Sometimes you just have to laugh
“When eating the @stelmo shrimp cocktail, one must say, ‘It’ll clear your sinuses.’” — @chrisceciljr
If you haven’t had a shrimp cocktail from Indiana’s most famous restaurant, do you even live here?
“There’s no such thing as a potluck. The correct Hoosier term is ‘pitch in.’” — u/MayorCharlesCoulon
“The best burger in the city is indisputably Workingman’s Friend. Cash only and very inconvenient hours, but worth going to.” — u/Jrpetersjr
Learn the lingo
“Adding an S to grocery store names: Kroger’s, Meijer’s.” — Taina L.
“It’s Broad Ripple, not Broadripple.” — @broadrippleindy
“I have a set list from a 2012 Go Radio show at The Emerson that has ‘NAP CITY NAPTOWN’ scribbled up at the top margin. I still have a good laugh when I see it. Getting the nicknames right is very important!” — Heather H.

These Indiana swimmers are headed to Paris
Swimming has been an event in the Olympics since 1896. | Gif by INDYtoday
Last week, we introduced you to a few Indiana athletes who had already qualified for the USA Olympic swim team — and now that the Swim Trials have concluded, several others have joined their ranks. Here are the final Hoosier additions to Team USA.
Luke Whitlock
The 18-year-old Noblesville resident became the youngest American man to make the Olympic swim team since Michael Phelps earned his spot in 2000.
Chris Plumb
The Head Coach of Carmel Swim Club has been with the program since 2003 after moving from Miami. He will join the Team USA coaching staff.
Chris Lindauer
Also named to the coaching staff was Chris Lindauer, who has served as the Peterson Family Head Swimming Coach at Notre Dame since 2022 after relocating from Louisville.
All together, the six swimmers who qualified this year set a record for the most Indiana-based swimmers to ever make the team. Cue the standing ovation.
Here’s another unofficial + somewhat baffling Hoosier rule I’ve noticed lately: Pronouncing “Reeses” as “Ree-CEES.” I’ll stop correcting people and let the iconic commercial speak for itself.
