Indianapolis makes a lot of great craft beer — in fact, USA TODAY 10Best named Indy the No. 7 best beer city in the US in 2024. Local brewers are constantly tapping their creative juices to drum up crafty collaborations, standout recipes, and fun names for their frothy masterpieces.
As we celebrate Drink Up Week sponsored by Social Cantina and The Tap, we’d like to raise a glass to five Indy-centric brews with names that draw inspiration from our city’s history, communities, and culture.
Hometown Hero Golden Ale, Triton Brewing Co. This beer’s name pays tribute to local hometown heroes and takes it up a notch: A portion of sales are donated to local charities that support US military veterans, police officers, and firefighters.
Style + flavor: This 4.5% pale, gold brew tastes light, clean, and refreshing — even if you’re not an avid craft beer drinker.
Hoosier Gameday Lager, Upland Brewing Co. With crimson + cream colors all over the can, this Indiana University Athletics-branded beer was clearly made for IU fans. Upland tapped consumers for feedback on the brew’s name, label design, and characteristics — now, that’s teamwork.
Style + flavor: This smooth, 4.7% ABV Vienna lager is rich, malty, and subtly toasty with slight caramel flavor and light, earthy floral notes.
Indianapolis Brewing Company Lager, Sun King Brewing The brew pays homage to IBC — the historic brewing company that ran from 1887 to 1948 — and became one of the 10 largest breweries in the US in the 1890s. Even the can art takes inspiration from IBC’s whimsical logo, as “an iconic brand reborn.”
Style + flavor: With a 4% ABV, this easy-drinking light lager is perfect for warmer days; serve it ice cold.
Cheers to you, Naptown. This is a sampling of local craft brews with Indy-related nods in their names. If we missed your favorite, share it with us.
