🥯 Holey bagel, Batman

A hole-istic guide to Indy’s best bagels

Every once in a while, a culinary item sparks a debate so fierce that it consumes the entire planet. One of our favorite food items to be extremely opinionated about? Bagels.

Today, let’s set our differences aside and highlight some of the delicious holey circles the Circle City has to offer.

Sidedoor Bagel
Named one of the best bagels in the US by Bon Appetit, Sidedoor is almost as well known for its lines as it is for its one-of-a-kind bagels + sandwiches. Fortunately for us, a recent expansion means shorter lines, so you can grab your BECCY in record time.

Pro tip: Skip the line at Sidedoor by preordering your bagels the evening before.

Bagel Fair
This family-owned shop first opened its doors in 1975, with a secret recipe that’s 100+ years old. It sells more than a dozen bagel varieties, including bialy: A chewy, baked flat bagel topped with onions, poppy seeds, and salt.

Ripple Bagel & Deli
Bagel sandwiches from this cozy shop come steamed — and as the owners say, “you haven’t lived until you’ve had it steamed.” The massive menu guarantees a sandwich for everyone, and if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can order yours “lottery style” to let the employees build a surprise custom creation.

Shapiro’s Deli
Shapiro’s is forever the name on our lips for many different items (see our sandwich guide and our soup guide), and bagels are no exception. You can order any one of its legendary sandwiches on a fresh housemade bagel.

Bearded Bagel
What began as a humble food truck blossomed into a full storefront in December 2021, and Bearded Bagel hasn’t slowed down since. You can still find its truck serving incredible sandwiches outside pretty much any major event you can think of, from concerts at Ruoff to Colts games at Lucas Oil.

Did we miss your favorite bagel? Let us know.

We asked, “What other areas would you like to see Indy’s budget applied towards?” Here’s what you said:

Common themes included road repairs, more pedestrian-friendly areas, and support for the arts. | Photo by @jdgrohvisuals
  • “Environmentally-minded infrastructure (sick of the flooding + power outages).” — Grete S.
  • “Libraries.” — Kathy H.
  • “Parks, especially maintaining current facilities.” — Sarah M.
  • “Schools.” — Tyne S.
  • “A free pickleball park for downtowners.” — Deb T.
  • “Restoration to old vacant downtown buildings and crime reduction on downtown streets.” — Shelley W.
  • “It’s time to stop repairing potholes and resurface roads properly.” — Sharon S.
  • “Support for the arts, theater, etc.” — Janie H.
  • “Traffic calming, protected bike lanes, and sidewalks.” — Jordan W.
  • “Homelessness (shelters, placements) and mental health agencies.” — Karen M.
  • “Education dollars to IPS and Township schools to teach ‘don’t litter.’ And force garbage hauling companies to change their dump bodies so loose garbage stops flying all over the roadways. It’s the biggest source of neighborhood litter!” — Mary M.
  • “As the capital of the state of Indiana, we need better paved roads.” — Gaynel B.
A big thank you to everyone who shared their voice. We encourage you to contact your district Councilor to help your priorities become realities.
