If you’re like us, the “somewhere on Google Maps” trend has been front and center on your social media feeds this winter.
Here’s how it works: folks search their home address to find special memories captured by Google over time, like their grandfather mowing the lawn, childhood pets in the driveway, or even themselves playing outside.
It got us thinking, what moments in Indy have been memorialized by Google Maps? We dug up some pretty incredible views showing how much Indy has developed and changed in the last few years — including the addition of famous murals, the old names of Gainbridge Fieldhouse and National Centre, and more.
Somewhere on Google maps... it’s 2019 and the area that’s now the thriving North Mass District is mostly abandoned, anchored by an empty facility that will later become North Mass Boulder.

It’s a sad day for hot chicken lovers. The Joella’s Hot Chicken location in Broad Ripple reported its last day of business was Sunday, Jan. 26. Its locations at 4715 E. 96th or 2554 E. 146th St. in Carmel remain open. (IndyStar)

The Pro Volleyball Federation’s inaugural All-Star Match is set to serve a history-making game at the Fishers Event Center on Saturday, Feb. 22 — and four-time Olympic medalist Shawn Johnson was announced as the event’s co-host. Get tickets before they sell out.
Development
This week, IPS began demolition of the former Joyce Kilmer School 69 at 34th Street and Keystone Avenue. Construction will soon begin on a new building to house a high-ability elementary school program. It’s slated to open for the 2027-28 school year and will serve 650 students. (IndyStar)
