We’ll let you in on a secret… or 10. We’re a solid 100 years out from the time speakeasies flourished in the Prohibition Era — but the more things change, the more they stay the same. Today, speakeasy-style bars act as a nod to the past. Except now, they’re totally legal.

🍸 For speakeasy vibes

The Exchange
Right at the gateway to Mass Ave, The Exchange — what used to be Hammond Block built in 1874 — is now part of one of the oldest original buildings still standing in the city. It houses 450+ of the best whiskeys in the country.

Thieves
This craft cocktail bar has a speakeasy-like environment, and it’s moving to a larger space in June at 6302 Guilford Ave. The new location will double as a coffee shop during the day.

🗝️ For the real deal

Prepare to pull up with a password or do a little searching to find these spots.

Commodore
Listen for tunes if you want to see what’s shakin’ at this Fountain Square favorite. If you find it, no password is required to enter.

Bootleggers
This speakeasy is on point with underground catacombs — password required. If you’re looking for a snack while you’re there, there’s a restaurant upstairs.

IU Indianapolis is engineering a new building that will improve its research opportunities and infrastructure. Construction on its interdisciplinary STEM Lab Building project has broken ground at a site on North Blackford and West New York streets.

The 52,000-sqft development will be an addition to the existing Science and Engineering lab building. Once the $60 million project is completed, the “STEM Lab Building” will include both the existing and new spaces. The project will add modern research labs, a 3D bioprinter lab, and spaces for biomedical work.

The building will be a site for the Science and Technology Corridor that aims to expand STEM degree options and research offerings for IU students, in alignment with the university’s 2030 strategic plan.

The new facility is expected to be completed in 2026.
