Shoutout to the sharp-eyed readers who reminded us Indiana has had Ben & Jerry’s shops before, though they’ve all closed. While yesterday’s newsletter stated the new Carmel shop would be the first-ever, it will actually be the brand’s only physical storefront in the state once it opens.
Yesterday marked 38 years since the opening ceremony of the 1987 Pan American Games — a three-week, international celebration that turned Indianapolis into a global stage.
So, what made the festivities so iconic? Let’s rewind.
Indy wasn’t originally planning to host the Tenth Pan American Games. When two other countries backed out, the city had just two and a half years to prepare (instead of the usual five to six years).
Produced by Walt Disney World Productions, the opening ceremony at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway drew ~80,000 people and was the largest outdoor live entertainment event in US history at the time.
The Games brought together 4,453 athletes from 38 countries and drew worldwide media attention, with 2,100 journalists and 26 hours of CBS coverage.
The event’s official mascot, Amigo the Pan Am Parrot, was created by local studio Perennial Pictures and toured Indiana to spread goodwill for two years before the Games.
