If you’ve eaten watermelon in a Beech Grove park before, you might be a criminal.

Calling all smooth criminals. Take a peruse of these weird Indiana laws that you may not have heard before.

It is illegal to fish with your hands.

Somewhere, Gollum is very offended. This law also prohibits fishing with wires, explosives, nets, traps, and firearms.

It is illegal to eat watermelon in public parks.

This code is specific to Beech Grove, where watermelon rinds tore through the bags of park trash cans often enough that somebody made a law about it. City board members have confirmed the existence of the law, though nobody seems to know where it is written down, and we couldn’t find any record of it ever being enforced — so munch away.

It is illegal for kids under 14 to swear.

Bet you didn’t know the city had a swear jar. This law is reportedly still included in the general ordinances of Indianapolis.

It is illegal to coast down a hill in neutral.

You’re gonna have to find another way to save money on gas. We imagine this law is in place to cut down on the possibility of accidents, which we fully support. Good thing we don’t have many hills in Indiana anyways...

It is illegal to possess a laser pointer on city property.

This law is specific to Evansville, but made us chuckle. It feels like it was cooked up by someone whose Powerpoint presentation was interrupted one too many times.

It is illegal to throw a snowball across the street.

This odd law is still in place in Warsaw. Someone call Buddy the Elf.

Know another weird law that should be on our list? It’d be a crime not to tell us.
