Kayaking, canoeing + paddle boarding are great ways to explore the Indy area. But before we dive in, check out this paddling safety guide.

Here are a few local options to get your feet wet:
  • Indy Canal | Canal Walk | 5-minute drive | That’s right, you don’t have to leave the city limits for this one. Wheel Fun Rentals offers kayak, gondola rides, and paddle boat and swan boat rentals.
  • White River | 17180 River Rd., Noblesville | 30-minute drive | Check out Strawtown Koteewi Park while you enjoy a half- or full-day trip spent kayaking or canoeing.
  • Sugar Valley | 1313 IN-47, Marshall | 1-hour drive | Canoe, kayak, or tube through Turkey Run State Park + Shades State Park.
  • Blue River | 5 US-150, Fredericksburg | 2-hour drive | Really rough it + spend a day or two rowing down the Blue River.

Today Is
  • Juneteenth, which marks the end of institutional slavery in the US. It is a federal holiday, so expect closures. Commemorate the day with free admission to the Indiana State Museum and historic sites + celebrate with live performances, hands-on activities, or take a tour through another historic site.
Traffic
  • An $80 million construction project is planned for five miles of State Road 32, connecting Westfield + Noblesville. It will widen to four lanes, switch seven intersections to roundabouts, and build asphalt paths on both sides of the street. Construction is expected to start in 2026. (IndyStar)
Development
  • Fishers city officials announced plans for two major development projects — a $90 million age-restricted luxury apartment building + a $32.5 million “urban village” in the downtown district. Learn more about the projects. (IBJ)

  • An Indianapolis elementary school has been named one of the 10 finalists for a “World’s Best School” prize. Perry Township’s William Henry Burkhart Elementary is nominated in the “community collaboration” category + is one of four US schools named as a finalist. Learn more. (CBS4)
Hoosier
  • Indiana native Carl Erskine is the recipient of the 2023 Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The former Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher is a longtime activist for athletes with special needs. He’ll be recognized in late July during this year’s Hall of Fame Weekend. (WISH)

  • Lights, camera, action. The Indy Shorts International Film Festival is back with sʼmore summer short film fun July 18-23 at Living Room Theaters, Newfields, and virtually — with 165+ short films curated into 29 themed programs. Tickets go on sale Thursday, June 22.
Cause
  • Hundreds of volunteers and 150 pets at Paws and Think are taking part in Pride Month by offering therapy animals to support unhomed LGBTQ+ youth in a local transitional living program. The organization says one out of every three LGBTQ+ youth seeking services there has left behind a family pet. (WISH)
