Your unofficial Indy end-of-summer bucket list

INDYtoday: Indy_Square Scoop Ice Cream_AUG23
Square Scoop is named after its location, not the shape of its scoops — and its flavors are anything but square. | Photo by @squarescoop
We’re officially just about a month away from the start of fall — water you doing to savor the last days of summer?

With Indy’s outdoor venues, water spots, ice cream shops + warm weather activities, anything is popsicle, err — possible. Put on some sunglasses and start crossing things off on our top 10 end-of-summer activities list.

City editor Shea made a weekend camping trip up to Chain O’ Lakes to complete the nine lake paddle challenge.

  1. Stop by one of Indy’s many ice cream shops for a scoop (or three).
  2. Have a picnic with these pro tips.
  3. Sun’s out, buns out. Enjoy the unofficial dish of summer — hot dogs.
  4. Grab a cozy blanket and head to the countryside to see some stars.
  5. Soak up the rest of patio season before the space heaters come out.
  6. Put some time on the calendar for a date night with your new fling, your longtime love, or yourself (you deserve it).
  7. Catch one of the 70 different IndyFringe shows before Sunday, Sept. 3.
  8. Watch a movie from the comfort of your car at Tibbs Drive-In Theatre or surrounded by chef’s kiss-worthy food at “Movies at Midtown.”
  9. Work outside and enjoy the fresh air before it gets too chilly.
  10. Kayak, canoe, or paddle board around the Circle City.

Bonus points if you take advantage of these seasonal adventures:
  1. Bring your lawn chairs and a bottle of wine to Symphony on the Prairie.
  2. Practice some zen with outdoor yoga at Holliday Park.
  3. Bring the whole family to the Feast of Lanterns on Saturday, Aug. 26.
  4. Chase away the end of summer blues with, well, the Fishers Blues Fest, grooving your way Friday, Sept. 1 and Saturday, Sept. 2.
  5. Hit the 56th annual Penrod Arts Fair on Saturday, Sept. 9.
What’s the must-do thing on your end of summer bucket list? Let us know so we don’t end up with FOMO (aka fear of missing out).

News Notes
Development
  • Have you always wanted to live along the Monon? You may get your chance in late 2025 with Monon 22, a new 111-unit apartment complex planned on the near north side. One quarter of the apartments will be affordable workforce housing. (IBJ)
Sports
  • Swish swish — the Pacers have released their season schedule, which will include 40 home games in Indy. Tickets go on sale at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27.
Cause
  • Looking for a local way to support relief efforts in Maui? Carmel’s Hawaiian-themed A2Z Café plans to host a fundraising luau in October. Keep an eye on its Facebook page for more details. (WRTV)
Real Estate
  • For the 18th month in a row, existing home sales in central Indiana have decreased. July saw a 20.3% drop from June’s sales. Here’s hoping those interest rates drop soon too. (IBJ)
Show
  • Have you attended a Rock the Ruins show this summer? The concert series has sold out 5+ events at Holliday Park already this season. Snag tickets to see The Teskey Brothers on Saturday, Aug. 26 before it’s too late.*
Finance
  • Refinance rates are skyrocketing. But home equity rates remain relatively low — which means that now is a great time to borrow against your home. Calculate your payment.*

As obsessed as I am with summer (hi, fellow Leos), I can’t deny the siren song of pumpkin spice drifting ever closer. Until it finally hits all the local spots, I’ll be sipping on Command Coffee’s peach pie white mocha.
