We know the question on your mind, Hoosiers — when’s it going to get cool again?
Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect for September, October, and November.
While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what fall will bring.
Reminder: The first day of fall is on Sunday, Sept. 22.
🌡️ Temperature
Think above average. This fall, Indy has 40-50% chance of temperatures being higher than normal.
🌨️ Precipitation
Expect average precipitation. Indy has an equal chance of seeing above or below normal rainfall amounts this fall.
☀️ Drought
Drought conditions are likely to develop for much of central Indiana this season.
September
September typically brings a welcoming transition from the heat of summer to the cool of autumn in Indy. While temperatures historically remain high at about 75.9°F, there’s a decrease towards the end of the month — although we’ve felt an up and down jump in temperatures so far this month.
You’ll also notice the city gets darker earlier as the days shorten, bringing a clear change in pace from the lingering summer daylight — a good reminder to start cozying up indoors or gathering around a bonfire.
October
For some of us, October is the official start of fall because it typically carries the essence of autumn + you really start to see and feel the temperature change — an intermediate period between the warm summer and brisk winter. As temperatures moderate, falling to an average low of 47.3°F, we’ll get a refreshing chill after a very hot summer.

Athenaeum hosts 16th annual GermanFest in Indianapolis, IN

The festival is a celebration of German American heritage in Indianapolis and acts as a bookend to Oktoberfest season, which typically runs the month of September and first week of October.
The festival celebrates the tradition and culture of Indy’s German ancestors with food, drinks, live music, and games. You can’t forget the keg toss + fan-favorite wiener dog races. This year, the Athenaeum is focused on providing more true, traditional German-style food.
“It’s a good way to connect with local community members, [...] especially if you’re new to the market and don’t really know what’s going on. It’s a really fun way to step into the Mass Ave. or Lockerbie neighborhood and start to get a feel for this part of town,” said Craig Mince, Athenaeum Foundation President.
The festivities will run from 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 on Michigan + New Jersey streets, outside the Athenaeum. Pro tip: get tickets in advance.

A candle warmer. Ditch the matches and opt for this contemporary lamp that will evenly burn your candles, sans smoke.
While I would love to see a weiner dog race, GermanFest falls on my birthday — and I have other plans to celebrate. This year, I’ll be staying in a Getaway cabin in Brown County with friends. Hopefully we’ll have some peak fall foliage for our nature adventure. Fingers crossed.
