The legacy of Madam C.J. Walker

As Women’s History Month is comes to a close, we want to take a moment to share the history of one of Indy’s most influential women — Madam C.J. Walker.
She has a building named after her, she’s the center of a painted mural downtown, and she even had a Barbie created in her honor. Here are a few facts about the self-made millionaire.
Walker’s real name was Sarah Breedlove. She was born in Louisiana, moving to Indianapolis in 1910 to start up her business selling “Madam CJ Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower.” At the time, Indy was the largest inland manufacturing center in the nation.
Walker’s factory included a hair and manicure salon, along with another training school. The Madam Walker Legacy Center was built after her death + became the company’s new manufacturing site.
