Hot and rainy. That’s what The Old Farmer’s Almanac is predicting for Indiana this summer. Central Indiana is expected to experience a “warmer than usual” summer, with the hottest periods being in early-to-mid July. (IndyStar)
Community
IndyGo is launching a project that will temporarily install ~30 cameras on traffic lights or telephone poles this summer to collect data to hopefully improve safety. The cameras are going up at specific bus stops and intersections with a history of risk for pedestrians. (WTHR)
Listen
The month of May is officially here — which means checkered flags are out + the sights and sounds of racing are afoot. To kick things off and remind us what it means to be in Indy in May, local author John Green wrote a letter to the Indy 500. Listen to it.
Civic
The Carmel City Council is considering an ordinance that would increase fines for drivers who park their vehicles in areas reserved for pedestrians + bicyclists — from $10-$100 to $200 for a first offense, $250 for a second offense, and $2,500+ for additional offenses in a year. (IBJ)
Wellness
Tomorrow is National Fitness Day, celebrated each year on the first Saturday of May. Get your sweat on at one of these local gyms. If fitness isn’t your thing, it’s also one of our favorite holidays of the year — National Lumpy Rug Day.
Holiday
May the fourth be with you. Sunday, May 4 is “Star Wars” Day — a celebration of the beloved space opera. In addition to watching the films, you can observe the occasion by avoiding the Dark Side and being a force for good by performing a local random act of kindness.
Eat
Chicken + waffles are back at KFC. The popular combo hasn’t been on the menu in over five years — well, at least not at the fast food chain. We know quite a few local brunch spots where you can find the sweet and savory dish.
Listen
Explore soundscapes around the world with this interactive map. The map features over 7,000 sounds from 130 countries and territories. For Indy, someone uploaded the sounds of exploring the Coca-Cola Bottling Company (aka Bottleworks) back in the day.
Sports
The Pacers made quick work of the Milwaukee Bucks, winning the first-round series in five games. How did they do it + can they do it again in round two? Locked On host Tony East breaks it all down.

🍸 Speak easy about these Indy bars
Have you visited this bar behind the lobby of the Bottleworks Hotel? | Photo via @sundryandvice + @amyelisabethphotog
We’ll let you in on a secret… or 10. Today, speakeasy-style bars act as a nod to the past. Except this time, it’s totally legal. At these spots, you’ll get the feel of a speakeasy without having to worry about keeping it a secret. Tell all your friends.
Sundry & Vice
Step behind the lobby of the Bottleworks Hotel and you’ll find an intimate bar with draft cocktails, beer, and wine.
Verita Cocktail Lounge
This spot serves up Italian cuisine and will draw you in with its intimate ambiance and comfortable outdoor patio, but don’t forget to look for the speakeasy while you’re there.
Nowhere Special
By the same owners of Bocca and The Commodore, this spot located in the basement gives speakeasy energy with exposed brick, low light, and a shocking amount of seating for an upscale cocktail experience.
Another spot with speakeasy vibes: 1933 Lounge. The downtown location is the official speakeasy of St. Elmo Steak House, but I also love the space at the new Carmel location.
