Hey, Hoosiers — weather you liked it or not, we got our first snow this past weekend + with the rollercoaster of a forecast we have in store this week, we couldn’t resist peaking at some of the major weather trends headed our way.

Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures + precipitation trends to expect. While exact weather conditions like snowfall typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, accurate seasonal outlooks can help communities prepare for what winter will bring. Here’s what’s coming in our city:

🌡️ Temperature

Think warmer than average. This winter, there is a 40-50% chance that Indy’s temperatures will be higher than normal. Because of that, four of the last six snowfall seasons have been below normal in Indianapolis.

🌨️ Precipitation

Let it snow. Indy’s precipitation levels are predicted to be leaning above normal. The Great Lakes and parts of the Ohio Valley have the greatest chances for wetter-than-average conditions.

☀️ Drought

The Upper Midwest is among the most likely to experience drought improvement.

By the month: December

Indy’s average low-temperature in December is 34°F to 48°F or in the freezing 20°F to 30°F range. To make matters colder, winds typically blow at high speeds to increase the effect + a winter storm is usually lurking around the corner. Bonus: here are the NOAA’s winter safety tips. ❄️

By the month: January

Indy’s lows in January average in the 21°F to 36°F range. DYK? January is usually the coldest month of the year in Indiana — when temperatures drop in the frigid zone. Historically, January is also the snowiest month of the year with as much as 10” in the northern part of the state.

By the month: February

Average temperatures in February vary from a cold 17°F during the night to a warm 50°F during the day + snowfall is usually in the range of 8" to 12". Fun fact: February is the driest month of the year in Indiana.

Enjoy the warmer temps today, Indy. We’re looking ahead to a windy Wednesday in the 60s before tumbling back into highs in the 40s Thursday. ❄️
