How to join a board or commission in Indianapolis

Love your city? Get engaged by joining a board or commission related to a topic you’re passionate about or have experience in.

Getting involved in making important decisions in the Circle City is easier than you think.

Calling all movers and shakers. Are you ready to become an even more engaged citizen? One way to get involved is by serving on one of Indy’s 48 boards and commissions.

These groups advise city leaders on a wide range of issues, from land use and development to parks, animal care, historic preservation, housing, and transportation. Board members review proposals, offer recommendations, and help guide policies that affect day-to-day life across the city.

How to get started

Indianapolis’ boards and commissions page allows you to explore each group’s focus and responsibilities. Any Indy resident can apply, though some roles may call for specific experience or expertise. You can find application forms on individual pages — a few committees that we saw had vacancies as of April 2026 include the Board of Indianapolis Animal Care Services, the Assessment & Intervention Advisory Board, and the Indianapolis Charter School Board.

Not ready to join a board or commission just yet? Bookmark the meeting schedule for 2026 to listen in on discussions or participate in public hearings.

If you want to dip your toes in even further, sign up as an Indy Documenter and get paid to attend public meetings, take notes, and ask questions.
