The Indianapolis Cultural Trail and the City of Indianapolis announced that they’re planning a $21.2 million expansion of the trail west across the White River.
The new segment will link downtown’s Wholesale District to near west side neighborhoods + add one mile along South Street, Kentucky Avenue, Henry Street. Plus, a new Henry Street bridge will be built south of Washington Street in 2024.
Construction is anticipated to begin on the new expansion in late 2025 and be completed by late 2026. This is the second expansion project of the Cultural Trail in its 10-year history. The other project currently under construction includes two segments at Indiana Avenue/10th Street + South Street.
When the White River Expansion is complete, the Cultural Trail will stretch nine miles.

Funding for the second expansion includes landscaping, lighting, and maintenance of the trail — plus additions to its public art collection, which will have ongoing public involvement.
The expansion of the trail will help increase the walkability of the Circle City and connect downtown to Elanco’s new headquarters and Indy Eleven’s new stadium, Eleven Park, that is also set for the western edge of the White River.
