More safety, social, and road initiatives heading to Indianapolis, IN

This week, three different initiatives were unveiled to tackle issues with Indy’s safety, housing, and road conditions over the next few months.
Here’s a breakdown of the steps the city is taking and how much it will cost.
🧠 Mental health crisis response
Mayor Hogsett announced that the city is investing $2 million of this year’s city budget to create a clinician-led response team to help with local emergency situations. Its launch was brought about thanks to advocacy from Faith in Indiana last year. Starting in July, the team will be able to respond to nonviolent mental health emergencies to deescalate, address anything urgent, and provide a care plan for Hoosiers in need from 911 calls. About 36 employees are planned for the team and they’ll cover the downtown and east side districts, based out of the City-County Building.
🏠 Homeless outreach
The city has also set aside $686,000 over 18 months to connect unhomed individuals with wraparound services and housing. The “Downtown Collaborative Outreach Initiative” will staff six outreach specialists employed by Horizon House + Adult & Child Health to work every day of the week to improve conditions for neighbors without housing in the Mile Square area with the hope of becoming a model for additional efforts.
🚧 Road improvement
INDOT recently unveiled that it plans to put about $14 million toward improving the detour roads damaged during North Split construction, which we told you fully opened to traffic earlier this month. Streets, light poles, and crosswalks are some of the items that will be repaired during this process, especially on West Street. A concrete wheelchair ramp has already been fixed between Washington + Rural streets.

It’s one of the coolest exhibitions in Indy right now, and time is running out to see it for yourself.
For just 12 more days, “Monet & Friends Alive” is on display in THE LUME in Newfields. A stunning, immersive display of three-dimensional Impressionist art, the exhibition transports viewers to 19th century Paris to explore the world of Claude Monet and his artistic contemporaries. (Think: Pissarro, Renoir, Cézanne, Degas, and other iconic painters.)
The remaining acres at the Fishers Life Science & Innovation Park will soon be filled by a 100,000-sqft building. Certus Medical LLC + Radiological Care Services LLC will occupy 50,000 sqft and the other half will be up for lease. The two companies plan to employ 81 people in the building. (IBJ)
Traffic
Work will be underway soon for a major road construction project on the border of Fishers + Noblesville. The $44 million project will redirect 146th Street to go over Allisonville Road. The intersection between the two streets will then become a roundabout with a ramp going up to 146th. Stay in the know. (WISH)

Former Colts quarterback Matt Ryan is switching things up. CBS announced that the athlete is becoming a studio + game analyst for the upcoming season. However, Matt said that he’s not giving up on playing football and won’t be retiring just yet. (WISH)

Soon, you’ll be able to see 43 Hoosier icons downtown. No, not in the flesh, but their portraits will look down on the upcoming Bicentennial Unity Plaza, thanks to Chicago-based artist Anna Muphy.
The Indy Arts Council + Pacers Sports & Entertainment are teaming up for the fourth and final mural in the Bicentennial Legends series, and Anna will begin painting it in July. The mural will feature a slew of legends, including Eli Lilly, Julia Carson, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., and Edna Martin. A public dedication ceremony is planned for the fall.
