The mural will overlook the new Bicentennial Unity Plaza downtown.

Soon, you’ll be able to see 43 Hoosier icons downtown. No, not in the flesh, but their portraits will look down on the upcoming Bicentennial Unity Plaza, thanks to Chicago-based artist Anna Muphy.

The Indy Arts Council + Pacers Sports & Entertainment are teaming up for the fourth and final mural in the Bicentennial Legends series, and Anna will begin painting it in July. The mural will feature a slew of legends, including Eli Lilly, Julia Carson, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., and Edna Martin. A public dedication ceremony is planned for the fall.

The other Bicentennial murals highlight Major Taylor, Madam CJ Walker, and Etheridge Knight — which will be unveiled on Mass Ave. on June 30.

Want to get involved? Indiana Humanities and the Indy Arts Council are looking for Hoosier poets to write a poem inspired by the legends.
