HI-FI is a great venue to see smaller, up-and-coming acts before they make it big. | Photo by INDYtoday team
Shea here. I kicked off my weekend by seeing a band at HI-FI — and not just any old band, but one my sister and I used to follow around my hometown (Modesto, CA) in high school. It was a special reminder of the power of Indy’s independent venues to attract acts both new and seasoned, big and small from across the world.
Here are a few of my favorite small venues where you can see the best musical talent. Healer | This colorful hidden gem is a maze of experiential and experimental art, and the musical acts that perform here are just as unique.
The Cabaret | Fellow Broadway babies can’t miss this intimate club that attracts legends from the Great White Way. The Mousetrap | When you need a break from this bar’s booming speakers, order food and retreat to the pool room. I’ve survived many late nights here thanks solely to chili cheese tots.
Brick House | My husband and I had our second date here amid dueling piano bands playing songs requested by the audience.

Last weekend, I traveled up north for two separate festivals: The New Earth Festival in Atlanta and the Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival in Huntington. Both are worth marking on your calendar for 2026. New Earth has a killer variety of shopping and food, and Forks of the Wabash stood out for its old-timey charm and excellent selection of crafts for purchase, especially textile arts.
She’s favorite food item she tried at the Atlanta New Earth Festival was the loaded tater tots, which were cooked fresh on the grill and topped with pulled pork, jalapenos, cheese, and sour cream.
