Sneakerheads, this one is for you.

“Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks” is a groundbreaking exhibition at Newfields.

“The future is always being shaped by the present,” says Elizabeth Semmelhack, Director and Senior Curator of Bata Shoe Museum. “The exhibition includes many incredible and innovative new footwear designs that are promising to transform what we will wear tomorrow.”

Visitors will get to see 60 pairs of innovative shoes from past, present, and future, including:

  • The self-lacing Nike MAG (from “Back to the Future Part II”)
  • 3D-printed shoes
  • Sneakers made from mushrooms
  • And, even virtual footwear

“From sneakers created to address issues related to sustainability and inclusion to shoes that blur the line between the real world and the metaverse, this exhibition explores how forward-looking creators are helping us step into the future,” says Semmelhack.

The exhibition, co-organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Bata Shoe Museum, opens on Friday, Sept. 27 in the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.

Do you have a distinct memory associated with a pair of shoes or a story about a special pair? Hoosiers can share their story for a chance to have it featured in the IMA galleries.
