On Friday, the city’s Capital Improvement Board (CIB) approved $50 million in additional funding for inflation-related costs surrounding the Indiana Convention Center expansion portion of a larger redevelopment project.

If you haven’t been keeping up with this downtown development, we’ll fill you in. The Pan Am Plaza project is centered around a hotel tower that will go in the northwest corner of Capitol Avenue and Georgia Street across from the Convention Center. A skybridge will connect the two structures to ensure easy access for out-of-towners. The addition is planned to feature more public meeting space and the state’s largest ballroom.

Fun fact: Visit Indy says that the economic impact from the five conventions that have chosen Indy to host their events contingent on this new development can be rounded up to nearly $1.2 billion from 2026 to 2030.

A groundbreaking for the project is planned for spring 2023.
