Celebrate the Fourth of July with these fireworks and events in Indianapolis

Independence Day falls on a Thursday this year — long weekend, anyone? — and there are lots of celebrations happening around Indy.

Here are a few ways to celebrate the red, white, and blue around the Circle City:

Downtown Indy Fourth Fest | Thursday, July 4 | 6-10:30 p.m. | 500 N. Meridian St. | Free | Celebrate the second year of this Fourth of July event featuring food trucks, ice cream, and beverages + live music performances and fireworks synced to patriotic music. Pro tip: The best viewing spots are the Indiana War Memorial grounds + American Legion Mall. View the map.

July Fourth Celebration at Victory Field | Thursday, July 4 | 6:35 p.m. | Victory Field, 501 W. Maryland St. | $15-$21 | Celebrate the Fourth of July and wear red, white, and blue as the Indians wear patriotic jerseys and caps to take on the Bats, a Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.

Development
  • Redevelopment of the old City Hall building into a boutique 21c Museum Hotel will cost an estimated $100 million more than initially planned. The Central Indiana Regional Development Authority approved a budget of $264 million for the project, nearly doubling the price. (IndyStar)

  • Several laws went into effect yesterday, July 1. One of them is Senate Bill 185 — which states that Indiana students will no longer be allowed to have cell phones during learning in the classroom. It’s now up to each individual school board to put the rules in place for the new school year. (WRTV)

  • The Indiana Fever announced that it waived its second-round pick from this year’s WNBA Draft, guard Celeste Taylor, and activated forward Damiris Dantas. Taylor was selected 15th overall in this year’s draft and played in only five regular season games for the Fever this year. (WISH)

  • You may recognize MOCO Fragrances from local market events. Local fragrance maker Morgan Conner landed a partnership with nationwide retailer Urban Outfitters for a collaboration. Her exclusive scents are now available in Urban Outfitters stores across the country. (WISH)

  • German shepherd Abby was found inside a hot car on the northwest side. IMPD Officer Poe was one of the officers on the scene when Abby was rescued. After she was taken to Indianapolis Animal Care Services, Poe reached out to see about adopting her and the rest is history. (WISH)

I don’t know about you, but the Fourth of July snuck up on me — so my plans aren’t solidified yet. So far, my plan is to start the day with a nature walk with a friend at Fort Harrison State Park and then of course, I’ll probably be watching fireworks downtown.
