The deadline to register to vote in Indiana’s primary election is fast approaching (cough, it’s Monday, April 8).
Here are the must-knows about voting locally in the Circle City so you’re prepared for Election Day.
Important dates
- Monday, April 8 | Deadline for voter registration (Online by April 8 at 11:59 p.m.)
- Thursday, April 25 | Absentee ballot request deadline (aka vote by mail)
- Tuesday, April 9-Monday, May 6 | Early voting
- Tuesday, May 7 | Absentee ballot return deadline
Pro tip: If you’re sending in your ballot, make sure to allow ~14 days for the postal service to deliver it in time.
How to register to vote
- By mail: Download the English form here or the Spanish form here . Mail your completed form to the Marion County Board of Voters Registration, City-County Building (200 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46204)
- In person: You can pick up paper forms at the Marion County Board of Voters Registration, branches of the Indianapolis/Marion County Public Library, BMV branches, and township trustee offices.
- Online: Visit Indiana’s online voter portal . Click “Register to Vote”. Fill in your information (your name, address, and either an Indiana driver’s license number or state identification card number) and submit it.

Make sure you have these items checked off before you show up to the polls:
- Register or update your registration. You can check your voting status here .
- If you’ll be unable to vote in person, apply for an absentee ballot.
- More information will become available 2-4 weeks before the election but you can check on referendums + see who’s running in your community.
- Find your polling place to vote on Election Day. Polls will be open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m.
- Bring an acceptable form of ID with you.
