Gala apples on trees in an orchard
If loving a freshly picked apple in the fall is wrong, then we don’t want to be right. | Photo courtesy of @beasleys.orchard
Move over, pumpkin spice — we’re shining the spotlight on one of fall’s other iconic flavors: apple.

Whether you’re looking to pick your own to eat, bake, or turn into sauce, Indy’s local orchards have a vast variety of apples that are perfect for every use.

Not sure what types are best for what? Check out this tool from Stuckey Farm in Sheridan. Simply go to the month you plan to head to the orchard, then see when different types of apples will be available and what they are best used for.

It’s as easy as pie — no, literally. Honeycrisp apples will be available beginning Wednesday, Sept. 10, and they’re considered a top-tier choice for pies and baking

News Notes

Development

In case you missed it, the Indiana Fever broke ground yesterday on its multimillion-dollar, 108,000-sqft sports performance center in downtown Indy. Construction is expected to wrap up before the 2027 WNBA season. In less exciting Fever news, Caitlin Clark is out for the rest of the season. (WISH)

Health

Speaking of 2027 openings, get a first look inside IU Health’s emerging 44-acre healthcare campus. To refresh, the campus — which began construction in 2022 — will combine adult medical services from Methodist and University Hospitals into one facility with 864 beds, 50 operating rooms, and 110 emergency care spaces. (WISH)

Pets

Did you know? According to data from Zillow, 58% of renters are pet owners, meaning that rentals who roll out the welcome mat to Fido and Mittens may fill up faster than those that don’t. We can’t say we blame them — Indy is a pet’s paradise after all.

“It’s important… to ensure that these members are never forgotten.” As said by president Tony Murray, this is the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana’s ‘why’ behind its annual Fallen Fire Fighters Remembrance Ceremony. Held Thursday, Sept. 4, the ceremony honored seven fallen fire fighters who died in service. (WISH)
