POV: You’re looking for a quick getaway for the holidays, but you’re terrified of wasting your precious PTO sucked into tourist traps or eating at mediocre restaurants. When you don’t have INDYtoday to guide you, what’s one to do?
Never fret. Our parent company, 6AM City, reaches far beyond Indy, with City Editors like Nicole and Shea doling out the best local recs in places including Austin, Charlotte, Charleston, and Chattanooga, to name a few. Here’s what our friends in 16 fun destinations had to say.
Nashville, TN
City Editors Dylan and Skylar recommend exploring Nashville’s culinary scene, starting with a dinner reservation at Noko, Yelp’s “Best New Restaurant in the South,” and ending with an espresso martini nightcap at Le Loup in Germantown.
Don’t miss a walk through Cheekwood’s 55-acre estate with cultivated gardens, or the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s 350,000-sqft space tracing the genre’s roots in Music City and beyond. Pro tip: A few of the museum’s exhibitions are free.
Of course, you’ll need to experience a concert at one of the city’s prestigious venues. Try Ryman Auditorium (often called the “Mother Church”) or the Grand Ole Opry (step inside the iconic circle on a tour).
For accommodations, consider a unique stay at East Nashville boutique hotel Urban Cowboy or the Craftsman home turned Airbnb featured in the hit TV show “Nashville.” If you find your plans revolving around Broadway or catching a sporting event, enjoy the convenient downtown locations of The Hermitage Hotel, JW Marriott, and 1 Hotel Nashville.
Louisville, KY
Just two hours south of Indy, you’ll find yourself in Louisville: Home to a vibrant culinary scene, two professional soccer teams, and more bourbon than you can shake a whiskey thief at.
If you’re looking to spend some time in the great outdoors, Louisville has one of the only completed Olmsted Parks systems in the country — he’s the one who designed Central Park in NYC. If you’re more interested in the tastes of LOU, take a distillery tour on Whiskey Row, eat a meal at an award-winning restaurant, or stay at the home of the Hot Brown.
For something a little off the beaten path, City Editor Declan recommends a tour of a historic church and a sandwich at Shiraz.
San Diego, CA
You can expect a warm + sunny welcome from the moment you land at San Diego International Airport. After you’ve settled in at Catamaran Resort Hotel or InterContinental San Diego, the SDtoday team recommends checking out one of the city’s many beaches and grabbing a coffee at a local cafe like Better Buzz.
After a trip to the beach, City Editor Michael’s must-dos include a walk through Balboa Park, eating Mexican food in Old Town, and rooting for The Padres at Petco Park. City Editor Monica suggests a hike at Torrey Pines or Sunset Cliffs, shopping in South Park, and a snack from Liberty Public Market.
Seattle, WA
Welcome to the Emerald City. Without a doubt, you already know to hit up Pike Place Market and the Space Needle (both totally worth braving the crowds for). But you can’t take a trip to the Pacific Northwest without spending some time enjoying the area’s natural wonders.
Head downtown to take a ferry over to Bainbridge Island, where bookstores and fish n’ chip shops await you. If you have some extra time, City Editor Alina recommends taking a day trip around the Olympic Peninsula for mountain views, rainforest hiking, dramatic beach cliffs, and vampires, of course.
All that excitement will certainly leave you hungry. The Puget Sound is famous for its seafood: Make sure to grab a few bites of oysters at Westward or James Beard Award-winning Walrus and the Carpenter. Pike Place Market’s The Pink Door is also a dreamy venue for a romantic dinner with its waterfront views.
Fort Worth, TX
For a true Cowtown experience, head straight from your room at Hotel Drover to explore what the world-famous Fort Worth Stockyards have to offer. Locals and tourists come from all over to experience the twice-daily cattle drive, shop western wear and souvenirs, dine at the iconic Joe T. Garcia’s, and dance at the world’s largest honky-tonk, Billy Bob’s Texas (two-stepping optional).
The Stockyards aren’t the only thing that Fort Worth is famous for: Try the barbecue. You can’t go wrong with Goldee’s, Heim, or Terry Black’s. After a long day, City Editor Kate recommends relaxing with a stroll through Sundance Square and the Fort Worth Water Gardens downtown — which was featured as the backdrop in Kendrick Lamar’s “N95” music video — or catching a rodeo at Cowtown Coliseum.
Kansas City, MO
Feel like a local in this certified sports city by taking a ride on the streetcar to CPKC Stadium, home of the KC Current + the world’s first purpose-built women’s sport stadium, or dive in to America’s pastime at 18th & Vine’s Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
Getting hungry? When you’re ready to dine, the saucier the better — City Editor Maddie recommends trying Kansas City’s world-famous barbecue at local gems like Arthur Bryant’s or the more upscale Jack Stack. Top off your visit with a nightcap at one of the city’s numerous jazz clubs, offering atmospheric experiences like the all-red Green Lady Lounge.
Raleigh, NC
City Editor Allie loves the small town feel + big city amenities of Raleigh. If you’re going to do anything while you’re in town, grab a bite at Poole’s, Ajja, or Crawford and Son for just a taste of Raleigh’s southern roots.
Raleigh is known as the Smithsonian of the South for its variety of free museums. Become an amateur paleontologist at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ one-of-a-kind Dueling Dinosaurs exhibit with a live paleontology lab or explore the first state art collection at the NC Museum of Art.

A visit to Tampa Bay isn’t complete without catching a game, whether it’s a Bolts faceoff at Amalie in the heart of downtown or a spring training game in the Florida sun. Avoid Woodruff Road, especially during the holidays, and consider visiting when Clemson is playing. Note the distinction between Augusta Road and Augusta Street, and skip swimming in the Reedy River.
For dining, you won’t regret indulging at Sum Bar and the iconic Soby’s. Don’t miss Falls Park and the Liberty Bridge, and for accommodations, check out the Grand Bohemian Lodge or Hotel Hartness for a memorable stay.
