Cake Picnic is a simple concept. Friends and strangers alike gather in a public park to share food, stories, and community. There’s just one catch: No cake, no entry.
The Cake Picnic tour is rapidly spreading across the world, and while it hasn’t announced a stop in Indy yet, we did some daydreaming about what locally-baked cakes we’d bring to the party.
The Cake Bake Shop
Readers with a great memory will recall that Editor Shea got her wedding cake from this longtime luxury Indy bakery. Gwendolyn’s Famous Earl’s Court Chocolate Cake may run us $125 — but we’ll be the most popular person at the picnic. If we feel like having something a little less decadent, the Maple Walnut Crumb Cake is also an excellent choice for a fall feast.
Three Dolls & Co.
This newly opened cafe + cakery used to operate as a food truck. Its vintage-style cakes are as delicious as they look — we’d order a heart-shaped hot pink faux ashtray cake or, depending on the time of year, something seasonal like the vanilla bourbon Christmas candle.
Sweet Escape Cake Company
This family-owned and operated boutique bakery offers more than 20 cake flavors and nine filling options to help us build our dream custom cake. We’re thinking cherry chip cake with cheesecake mousse — but if we want to just grab something from the case, the bakery always has a few dozen ready to go, like this super fun cartoon cake.
Circle City Sweets
Carrot cake lovers, this one’s for you. Circle City Sweets’ version of the springy classic is moist, decadent, and perfect for sharing with friends. And if there was ever any doubt about how good the bakery is, owner Cindy just won the World Dessert Championship.
Shapiro’s Delicatessen
If German chocolate isn’t your favorite all-time cake, we’re not sure we can be friends. We’re coconuts for Shapiro’s take — but its poppy seed cake would also make a unique addition to the picnic.
