Needlepoint is back: Here’s how to try it in Indy

Needlepoint is one of the hottest “analog hobby” trends. Here’s where you can learn the craft, pick up supplies, and meet other stitchers in Indianapolis and central Indiana.

At Stitch Club Indy, you can yap, grub, and work on your WIP alongside other needlepoint enthusiasts.

Needlepoint is making a major comeback as more Americans embrace “analog activities” to replace screen time.

These offline hobbies range from puzzles to scrapbooking, but needlepoint has quickly become one of the biggest standouts. Etsy reports searches for “beginner needlepoint items” are up 208% year-over-year, while social media trends like #WIPWednesday (“Work in Progress Wednesday”) encourage needlepointers to share their latest projects and cheer each other on.

If you’re curious about trying it for yourself in Indy, here are a few easy ways to join the needlepoint resurgence.

Take a beginner-friendly class

Zionsville’s Persnickety Stitchers has nearly a dozen classes dedicated solely to needlepoint. Start with a basic class and work your way up to advanced stitches. Bonus: Classes are scheduled on-demand, so you can get stitching tutelage no matter how busy your schedule is.

Newly-opened The Proper Stitch also offers needlepoint classes and every project under the sun in the heart of Carmel — keep an eye on its calendar, as classes sell out quickly.

Join a stitch club

Stitch Club Indianapolis meets up once a month, with 30+ members working on their projects over food, drinks, and, of course, a healthy dose of yap.

Do you know of another local shop or group helping crafters on their needlepoint journey? We’d be sew grateful if you let us know.
