Many big box stores and major retail chains are closing across the US, including in Indy. So for the love of all things local, we’re exploring some of our favorite unique alternatives to the familiar franchises.

Joann Fabrics

This craft store’s remaining Indiana locations are set to shut down by the end of May, but you can find plenty of art supplies — from paints to sewing supplies — at Griffy’s Art Supply at The Stutz and Crimson Tate Modern Quilter on Mass Ave.

There’s plenty more where that came from. We’ve got a whole list of Indy-owned craft supply stores.

Party City

The chain store is going out of business, closing all of its locations, including its three Indianapolis stores. Although our inner child will miss Disney movie-themed party sets, there are plenty of options to throw a stellar soiree with the help of locally-owned businesses.

The Accent Shop Inc. at 1472 W. 86th St. offers a wide variety of party and hosting goods like themed napkins, plates, and decor, plus cards for any occasion. Banzi Balloons + Event Services can take care of the balloon arch.

If you’re looking for party gifts, Twisted Sisters at 3937 E. 82nd St. has been a beloved destination gift shop on the north side for 15+ years and specializes in offering unique gifts that you won’t find in big box stores.

Forever 21

The retailer in both the Castleton Square and Greenwood Park malls have closed, but you can surely find a ‘fit that makes you feel forever 21 at a local shop. Pitaya in Broad Ripple has similar styles with a variety of young women’s clothing, jewelry, and accessories.

The Toggery Resale Boutique is another place to peruse timeless looks from local fashionistas.

Big Lots

All remaining Indiana Big Lots stores are set to close, but if you’re looking for deals on furniture, home goods, and groceries, you have plenty of options.

Try Rollin’ Dealz at 2926 E. Washington St. for discounts on furniture and Roses Discount Store at 7201 Pendleton Pike C. for everything from clothing to home goods to toys and snacks.
